Solidarity – Mutual Aid – Cooperation
In the Lac-Mégantic region, the origins of mutuality go back to 1926 with the creation of the Compagnie d’assurance mutuelle for fire protection in the municipalities of the united counties of Spaulding and Ditchfield, which later became the Compagnie d’asssurance mutuelle for fire protection and lighting in the city of Frontenac. In order to build a better organization offering complete insurance services, the Mutuelle de Frontenac merges its activities with the Mutuelle de Saint-Samuel, located in Lac-Drolet. It then becomes the Société mutuelle for fire protection of the Frontenac County which establishes its offices on the Vétéran Boulevard in Lac-Mégantic. The sales revenue for the Société mutuelle was at the time $290,000.
In 1988, the Société Mutuelle acquired its new headquarter building, which undergoes a complete renovation in 1995. Ensuing agreements with Promutuel Coaticook-Sherbrooke and Promutuel Appalaches-St-François (2004), the Société Mutuelle extended its territory to the East Angus and Fleurimont region, and changed its name for Promutuel Monts et Rives. Finally, in 2007, the Société Mutuelle acquired a portion of the Vigneault Lachance brokers’ clientele and now has an office in Guadeloupe.
Highlights 2013
Promutuel Monts et Rives is…
- Trust from almost 11,000 individuals who insure their own property or life, or that of other family members
- A total of $12,116,795 in written premium
- $22,000,000 in claims paid to insured members
- Assets of $11,550,000
In addition to auto, house, RV (motor homes), business, and farm insurance, Promutuel Assurance offers its members complementary products to fulfill their different needs.
The Tragedy of July 6th 2013 in Lac-Mégantic
Five days after the Lac-Mégantic tragedy, and thanks to the support and collaboration of its employees, the activities of the Société Mutuelle’s headquarter office, located within the disaster aera, had been relocated.
After such a tragedy, mutuality took on its full meaning. In effect, Promutuel Monts et Rives received help from many other mutuals,as well as from the Federation’s indemnity service. Insurance claims were processed rapidly, with cash advances to appease the worries of many of its members. “We made all possible efforts, and our customers experienced the local trait that sets us apart: our proximity with the impacted individuals”, said the Promutuel Monts et Rives’ general manager, Mr. Pierre Bélair.
The volume of business at the Société Mutuelle has been steadily growing and clearly shows the support from the people of the region.
“The solidarity of the Québec population touched the Lac-Mégantic community deeply. Without a doubt, with all the support, collaboration and financial help, our downtown will be stronger than ever. Here is a good reason why people from everywhere should feel at home with us”, continued Mr. Bélair.
